Regardless of whether or not you work in the creative field, I feel strongly that you need to find sources of inspiration to stay on your toes. The monotony of the daily grind can leave you feeling sluggish and without confidence, but don't let the man stick it to you! Get out there and start searching for trend setters in your area of interest who are doing innovative things from which you can relate, and most importantly things that give you something to look forward to.
As a University photographer my "grind" takes place during the spring semester. A slew of dimly lit year-end banquets, recognition events, and portraits consume every waking moment of my day. During the dog days of March, April and May I try to keep my creative juices flowing by actively setting time aside for my own personal, professional and creative well-being.
Creative exploration and innovation can be manifested in so many different ways. The important thing is that you just get out there and try something that makes you feel alive and delivers a sense of self-worth. Find something to spend your time on that is meaningful and has value, even if it's outside your comfort zone.
Right now I am finding tons of inspiration in the stunning videography work of a Mr. Devin Graham - AKA Devin Super Tramp. Devin has amassed a following of hundreds of thousands of people and has made a career out of doing what he loves. His passion and drive has given him a ticket to travel the world, producing videos from Kauai, Hawaii all the way across the globe to Dubai and beyond. I encourage you to take a look at the following video which got me hooked on his work: Fighting for your passion:
Really though, watch the rest of his stuff... including his most recent video on Machu Picchu which was released yesterday!
I'm going to end this post with one of my favorite sources of inspiration - The Holstee Manifesto. I have this thing hanging in my office and it serves as a constant reminder to keep on keepin' on with the things that mean the most to you, whatever that may be.
